December 2021 will began year four of Dionne McCollum being a part of the Pioneer family here at Delta College.
Since Dionne’s arrival, she has put a strong focus on the individual development of student-athletes and building relationships with the community. She has increased study hall requirements focusing on academic excellence, brought back the student athlete advisory committee (SAAC), and expanded student-athlete leadership meetings by inviting guest speakers. Developing student-athletes for life after JUCO, empathizing the importance of mental health, developing a stronger you, and many more. Dionne also created and the held the first Pioneer Athletic Conference for pioneer student-athletes. She also created, held the inaugural Pioneer Athletics Special Olympics in the fall of 2019, and held the Inaugural Pioneer Athletics National Girls, & Women in Sports Day in the Winter of 2022. Pioneer athletics invited Special Olympics athletes for the tri counties to spend a day on Delta’s campus in “A Day With ALL Athletes.” Pioneer Athletics has experienced great success during her time. Women’s Softball earned NJCAA Region XII DIV III Runner Up in the spring of 2019. Men’s Baseball earned NJCAA Region XII DIV III Champions and NJCAA DIV III Great Lakes District Runner Up in the spring of 2019. In the fall of 2019 Women’s Soccer earned MCCAA Champions, NJCAA Region XII DIV III Champions, NJCAA DIV III Great Lakes Region Champions, and NJCAA DIV III National Runner Up. Men’s Basketball earned NJCAA Great Lakes East Regional Runner Up in the winter of 2020. Women' Basketball earned MCCAA North Division Champions, Women's Basketball MCCAA Co Champions, NJCAA Great Lakes Region A Runner Up in the Winter of 2021. Also, in the Winter of 2021 Men's Basketball earned MCCAA North Division Conference Champions and MCCAA Co Champions. Men's Golf earned a 2nd place finish in the MCCAA, NJCAA DIV III Regional Champions and a 7th place finish at the NJCAA DIV III National Championship. In the Spring of 2021 Women's soccer had an undefeated season earning MCCAA Conference Champions, NJCAA DIV III Great Lakes District Championship and NJCAA DIV III National Championship. In the Fall of 2021 Women’s soccer earned the MCCAA Conference Championship, NJCAA DIV III Great Lakes District Championship, and finished NJCAA DIV III National Runner Up.
Dionne currently holds the role of Region XII DIV III softball and women’s basketball chair and MCCAA women’s basketball chair, and Region XII Assistant Men’s Director. In the winter of 2022 Women’s Basketball completed the season NJCAA DIV II Great Lakes Region B Runner Up.
Prior to arriving at Delta, Dionne served as Assistant Athletic Director for the District of Columbia Public Schools in Washington, DC for five years. During that time, she oversaw the sports of Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis, and Flag Football. She also oversaw approximately 140 coaches. She played a major role in growth and expansion of both middle school and high school athletic programs. Creating and implementing both skill development clinics and coaching clinics. She set a standard by moving all championship games to collegiate campuses. Prior to her departure, she was coordinating the first international trip for the sport of basketball.
Dionne has also served as a collegiate woman's basketball coach. Beginning her career as the Assistant Coach at NJCAA Division I Pratt Community College for one year. Moving on to NCAA Division II Kentucky State University as Assistant Coach for 3 years, where she assisted in the team’s back to back winning seasons and was the position coach to 2009-2010 Rookie of the Year, Stephanie Harper and Kiara Morgan who lead DIV II in blocked shots. She also coached All Conference Player, Latrice Watkins. She served as Associate Head Coach at NAIA Division II Marygrove College for two seasons. Completing her coaching career as Assistant Coach at NCAA Division II Elizabeth City State University for 3 years, where she aided in the team finishing with a 24-4 season in 2012-2013 and was the position coach to 2011-2012/2012-2013 All Conference Player Stephanie Harper.
Additionally, she has taught Athletic Injury and Preventions courses as an adjunct professor at Elizabeth City State University and served as a Strength & Conditioning Coach at Academy of Oak Park in Oak Park, MI.
Dionne played basketball throughout her academic career, beginning on the NJCAA level at Wayne County Community College District. She completed her basketball career in 2005 at Kentucky State University. She holds a BA in Physical Education from Kentucky State University, an MA in Athletic Training from The University of Findlay and is currently working on her PhD in Sports Leadership and Sports Management from University of Concordia Chicago. Dionne is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Dionne is a native of Detroit, Michigan and is excited to continue leading the Pioneer Family!
Dionne is married to Dominic McCollum and has three children, Demi, Dominic Jr. and Dule’.
