Speaker Bio
Betsy has a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University (1991). She spent 5
years working in social services, culminating in managing a crisis shelter for children and
adolescents. While there she became proficient in creating mental health programs, polices &
procedures for the youth in her center as well as the on-site school. After stepping away from her career to raise her 2 boys, she went back to school at VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership, where she earned her Masters of Education in August of 2017. Upon graduation, Betsy turned her focus to building her company. CWP’s business pillars are Advocacy * Education * Research.
CWP offers the Athlete MH LINK system. It is a 4 Pillar system: Education; Consulting; Links to Athlete-Trained Clinical Supports; and the one-of-a-kind “Brandable” Athlete Mental Health L*I*N*K mobile application. Our goal is to have all athletes and coaches create and continue to build their own Mental Health (MH) Playbook™.
Athlete MH Advocacy
Betsy is a fierce advocate for mental health education, at ALL levels. Although, athletics remains a company focus, she is a proponent for ALL youth and young adult mental health. She spends time meeting with her state legislators pushing for mental health curriculum. She is currently collaborating with the Virginia High School League to develop their Athlete MH Initiative.
Athlete-Centric Education & Consulting
CWP believes that the foundation for decreasing mental health stigma and increasing utilization of resources is Education. CWP has designed multiple Athlete-centric educational seminars. For HS, she presents to athletes, coaches & parents. Cutler Wellness Programs is busy building a library of video seminars. CWP also provides consultation to athletic organizations, to review their mental health programming and policies & procedures.
Athlete MH Research
Betsy completed a 44-item mental health research survey to college athletes at four universities. Her research focused on SA Perceptions of mental health help on their campuses. Her research was published in June 2020 and can be found here: http://csri-jiia.org/student-athlete-perceptions-of-stress-support-and-seeking-mental-health-services/. Further synthetization of data will yield additional submissions in the coming years. CWP has also partnered with Athletes Souls (a non-profit organization created by retired Olympians to help support transitioning elite athletes out of their sport) to distribute and collect Elite and Professional Athletes mental health perceptions data. CWP believes all mental health programming should be data driven. In addition to analyzing her collected data, Betsy is constantly reviewing new research.
